Located at 538 Congress Street in Portland, this nonprofit “Alternative Arts Venue” has a mission to present contemporary, unconventional, and emerging arts, artists and ideas. In 2011 SPACE added a second gallery next door at 534 Congress Street in order to increase its capacity for full scale art installations, more intimate events, and new resident artist opportunities.
Here are just a couple of the fascinating exhibits and events that appeared at SPACE: Tireless Device, a performance using a dress made of paper and LED lights by Maria Paz Garaloces, a 6-week drawing process installation by painter Gideon Bok, depicting a 3-point perspective drawing of the gallery, and the Letter Circle, an afternoon devoted to the art of writing traditional letters.
Executive Director Nat May encourages you to attend an upcoming event or even consider becoming a member of SPACE. “First we want to get you in the door to experience something you haven’t seen or heard before. We hope you’ll learn to trust our curating and stop in often for access to contemporary arts and ideas not found elsewhere in Maine. Our supporting members receive many benefits, but none as great as the reward of actively advancing the arts in our community.” Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 12-6 p.m. and by chance and appointment.
